On Saturday, April 24, 1999, people did gather in Philadelphia to demand a new trial and freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal.  Many anti-racist activists around the South helped to build the mobilization.
June 25-27, 1999
SARN activists met at Highlander Research and Education Center to learn and plan ways to broaden and deepen the network of anti-racist activists working together into the new millennium.

Durham Education Campaign
Students, teachers, parents and advocates met at the Durham Main Library to discuss closing the achievement gap.  Yvonne Perry of the NC Justice and Community Development Center presented the report:  Achievement Gap 2001.

It was important to see the data disaggregated to reflect the systemic nature of racial disparities in NC public schools.  Participants agreed to build the coalition to close the achievement gap in North Carolina

The community forum was co-sponsored by SARN and the Mekye Fund.

April 17, 2001
The Durham coalition to close the achievement gap will meet at the Durham Main Library at 6:30pm to examine the role testing plays in widening the gap.

Speakers will include Daniella Cook of the Common Sense Foundation and Irv Besecker of the NC Committee for Democratic Schools.  They will present the case for fundamental changes in the way NC uses high stakes testing.

Durham Education Strategy Session
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction reports that the majority (51.5%) of African-American students are failing compared to 20% of white students.

Education, Not Incarceration!
Organizations working for a just public education system will meet at Durham Main Library at 6pm. Participants will focus on closing the achievement gap. Michelle Cotton of the North Carolina Minority Youth and Family Resource Center will present data making the connection between school suspensions and juvenile incarceration. John Dye of People About Changing Education in North Carolina (PACE-NC) will describe the major programs of the Department of Public Instruction. Participants will discuss their vision of a just public education system; principles of unity to work together to achieve goals; obstacles that might hinder reaching goals; and opportunities to work together to build the campaign. Important discussion with Durham School Board Members, Police Chief Teresa Chambers and community representatives. Program begins promptly at 7pm at the Durham Main Library, 300 Roxboro Street. Please plan to attend, if you are concerned about high suspension rates, use of drugs in public schools and improvements in the quality of education.

Please attend a special planning meeting of the BRC Durham-Chapel Hill Organizing Committee at the Stanford L. Warren Library in Durham from 3-5pm.  Participants will discuss a special program scheduled for August 15 to promote the national BRC campaign: Education, Not Incarceration! Fight the Police State!

Nearly 300 Black activists gathered in Detroit to educate, agitate and organize themselves.  A delegation of 29 came by bus and plane to represent North Carolina.
